CHAPTER 12

Greening GGGI

GGGI stayed dedicated to its mission to achieve environmental sustainability around the globe in 2023 and continued to lead by example, emphasizing sustainable practices and encouraging their partners and communities to engage in the movement towards a greener future.

12.1 AIR TRAVEL AND FACILITY OPERATIONS

GGGI has been utilizing the ICAO Carbon Emissions Calculator and Greenhouse Gas Protocol to assess its carbon footprint from air travel and facility operations across all offices. These methods provide a key benchmark for monitoring progress and identifying areas for improvement in its ongoing sustainability efforts.

Includes GGGI staffs, consultants, and interns who are eligible to travel under GGGI Travel Rules

Figure 7: Share of Total Emissions

In 2023, GGGI emitted a total of 1,863 tons of CO2 (tCO2) where 1,480 tons of CO2 (tCO2) was from Air Travel (79%) and 383 CO2 (tCO2) was from Facilities Operations (21%). Air Travel emissions increased 62% from the previous year with a 2% increase in the total number of flights as GGGI continued to expand its program, and Facilities emissions decreased by 5% from the previous year in 2023.

12.2 PER CAPITA CARBON EMISSIONS

GGGI continued to maintain a low per capita emission rate in 2023. To contextualize this achievement, below is the comparison with other UN bodies using data from the 2023 UN Greening the Blue Report, which covers 2022 emission figures. For completeness, GGGI’s 2022 per capita emission figure is also included.

12.3 ADDITIONAL SUSTAINABILITY EFFORTS

GGGI HQ is operating 15 solar panels that have generated 3.6 MWh of renewable energy in 2023 and have generated a total of 15.1 MWh of renewable energy since installation.

GGGI HQ’s paper consumption showed a slight increase from the previous year but continues to maintain a much lower paper consumption level compared to pre-COVID levels.
